Kepayang Community Forest Project

A 4,888-hectare community-led conservation initiative in South Sumatra, Indonesia.

Overview

The Kepayang Village Community Forest spans 4,888 hectares of wetlands in South Sumatra. Located within the Merang peat dome, this forest is part of a vital biodiversity corridor. Since 2022, villagers have worked with Bumi Air Nusantara to restore ecosystems, strengthen livelihoods, and safeguard their future through a community-driven model.

Community at the Center

“Community at the Center”

At the heart of this project are the people of Kepayang Village, who hold a 35-year community forest license. Their leadership ensures that decisions are made locally, with Bumi Air Nusantara providing support, training, and technical expertise. Community voices shape every step, from forest patrols to livelihood programs.

What We Do

Strengthening Rubber Value Chains

Restoring Ecosystems & Preventing Fires

Restoring ecosystems and preventing fires are critical for both the village and the planet.

Together with the community, we build canal blocks to bring back natural water flow and lower fire risks. We also employ and train local patrol teams, ensuring nature is protected by those who know it best, the people who live here.

Strengthening Rubber Value Chains

Strengthening Rubber Value Chains

For generations, rubber has been part of village life, but farmers often face unstable prices. We help communities add value to rubber by introducing sustainable farming practices and establishing a community warehouse.

By selling collectively, farmers gain stronger bargaining power, fairer prices, and long-term security for their families.

Strengthening Rubber Value Chains

Ensuring Clean Water Access

We believe that every family deserves safe water at home. That is why we build household rainwater catchment systems so communities no longer depend on unsafe river water.

This solution help improves daily health, reduces disease, and gives dignity to households in Kepayang.

Strengthening Rubber Value Chains

Transforming Waste Into Community Solutions

We support community-based waste management initiatives that reduce household waste, improve sanitation, and protect the environment.

These efforts also build awareness, especially among youth, about keeping the village clean.

Strengthening Rubber Value Chains

Investing in Education & Health

Through scholarships, a community library, and health programs, the project invests in the next generation. Routine medical check-ups and health outreach strengthen family well-being and community resilience.

Strengthening Rubber Value Chains

Restoring Ecosystems & Preventing Fires

The community installs canal blocks to restore natural water flows, reduce fire risks, and revive wetlands.

Local patrol teams, employing village residents, monitor the forest to prevent illegal activities and respond quickly to fire threats.

VILLAGER • KEPAYANG VILLAGE FOREST

I learned much more about the forest and about fire after the training with Bumi Air Nusantara. From that, I feel Bumi Air Nusantara not only gives knowledge, but also involves us directly. It makes me more confident that women also have a role in protecting the forest for our children.

Looking Ahead

This project aims to become a self-sustaining model of community-led conservation, where ecosystems are restored, livelihoods are strengthened, and future generations inherit both healthier nature and stronger communities.
